A Disgraceful Riot

Black people were contributors to the local Oil Springs economy and the development of the early oil industry in Canada. Many workers were able to find work as day labourers in Oil Springs, however, discrimination was still a problem. On March 14, 1863 the Oil Springs race riot took place.

The landscape is mostly barren with scattered trees and fencing, suggesting a rural oil field setting.
